Make The Most Out Of Organic Gardening

Try raising organic garlic. You should plant garlic cloves in either early spring or late fall. Your soils should be well-drained. Lay each bulb into the ground ends up at a distance of about 4 inches away from the next bulb and 1-2 inches down into the soil. Green garlic shoots can be cut as they grow, and used in place of chives or scallions. The garlic is ready to be picked when the tops turn brown. Harden the skin by setting the bulb in the sun, it usually takes several days. Store the bulbs separately or tied in loose bunches in a cool place. Keep the soil healthy by adding mulch. Mulch can give your soil some additional protection and nourishment. It keeps the soil cool on very hot days, thus protecting the roots in the ground. Mulch slows down evaporation, thus helps your soil retain its moisture. This also helps all the weeds you have stay under control, relieving stress from your shoulders.

Using a large amount of mulch in your garden will save water. Mulch can decrease your need to water plants because it provides and conserves the moisture available to your plants. You can get mulch from a variety of sources like tree branches, dead plants and leaves, or you can purchase them at a gardening supply store. Don’t be afraid to use a great deal of it in your yard.

If slugs are a problem in your garden, use a beer trap to kill them naturally. Dig a hole the size of a glass jar, and bury the jar with the top at ground level. Next, fill the jar with beer until there is only one inch left below the mouth of the jar. The slugs will be attracted to the beer, and will then become trapped within the jar.
